TMS delivers small magnetic pulses to a specific area of the brain involved in mood regulation—typically the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex—using a coil placed on the scalp. The treatment is tailored to each individual, with the stimulation level adjusted according to the amount of energy needed to activate their brain’s nerve cells, which can vary from person to person.
TMS is a bulk-billed & drug-free option for those with Treatment Resistant Depression & Depression linked to Anxiety, PTSD, OCD, Pain. It uses strong magnetic fields to activate nerves in underactive regions of the brain to promote neural connectivity. 1 You can receive a referral from your GP or treating Psychiatrist (if you have one). To learn more about how clinicians can refer patients for TMS treatment, please click here. 2 Your journey begins with a comprehensive assessment to confirm that TMS is a suitable treatment for your needs. We will tailor your treatment plan based on your mental health background, current presentation, and treatment goals. 3 This one-time session allows the TMS Psychiatrist to identify the optimal treatment location and stimulation settings. For depression, the targeted area is usually the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. By stimulating the motor cortex, we observe a subtle muscle twitch—such as in your thumb—to determine your motor threshold and ensure accurate targeting. 4 TMS treatments are carried out while you sit comfortably in a recliner. A magnetic coil is positioned over the targeted brain area. Each session lasts around 20 minutes and is conducted five days a week for approximately 7 to 8 weeks. You are welcome to talk with the nurse, listen to music, or enjoy a Netflix episode during the session. 5 In addition to ongoing daily monitoring by our TMS nurses, you will receive formal reviews midway through treatment and again near completion. These check-ins help us confirm positive progress and allow for adjustments if needed. Your referring clinician will also be kept updated throughout your treatment journey.
